A friend gave me a set of lovely wooden bird whistles. The one that I’ve been most attracted to is the Mourning Dove. I had the thought it would also do for the traditional HooHoo of an owl, and searching around discovered it has the same pitch as one of the recordings I found of the Spotted Owl, which ranges in distribution from British Columbia to Mexico. The spotted owl is under pressure from habitat destruction throughout its range, and is currently classified as a near-threatened species. May 4, 2026
