Waking
Waking, opening eyes at 5:30am to a 99% full moon, falling back asleep, waking again at 7:50am to a blue sky, February 26, 2021, Kingston, NY. I’m reminded of “The Waking” by Theodore Roethke.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

The Witness by Pauline Oliveros
The Witness by Pauline Oliveros is “A solo duet with an imaginary partner, a duo or an ensemble” composed in 1989. The rendering here appears as a solo, but it was actually done as a simultaneous telepathic performance with an ensemble distributed in various locations around the Hudson Valley. The ensemble included the Talking Gong Trio (Claire Chase, Susie Ibarra, Alex Peh), Senem Pirler, Ione, Henry Lowengard, Peter Wetzler, Lisa B. Kelly, and Leaf Miller.
The presentation had been scheduled for outdoors at the Deep Listening Plaza in Kingston, New York as one of a series of events celebrating Oliveros’ and Ione’s birthdays. It had to be postponed because of inclement weather. For more information about both, see https://paulineoliveros.us/ and http://www.ionedreams.us/.

Maple Tree
For a little over a year now, I’ve been documenting life in the backyard of our new home in Kingston, NY with what I refer to as video miniatures. My intent is to attempt making connection with the land here via relatively close observation and viewing from varying angles as I add soundtracks and simple editing techniques. I have especially been wanting to do some kind of collaboration with the biggest maple tree that I see just out the back porch windows. Here’s a crude attempt making use of one of the Listening Sticks I found for use with the Delaware River Sounding project done in 1994. https://norlowrey.net/river/river.html#sticks.
